Advantage Play vs Recreational Play in Casinos

There are two main attitudes that people can have towards their real money play in casinos. The first attitude is that they view their play as purely recreational and they don't think much about their wins and losses. Instead, they focus on the emotional rush they get from the highs and lows of winning and losing. The second attitude is much less focused on the entertainment aspect of playing with real money in casinos and more concerned with trying to generate a profit for themselves. It's also possible to have the second attitude, but view the process as a form of recreation, and this is probably the best way to balance the different aspects of gambling.

Playing Blackjack for Real Money

One of the most popular casino games of the past century is blackjack. The game is based on trying to get cards that add up to 21. For recreational players, the game is fun and exciting since most hands involve an immediate emotional payoff. For advantage players, the focus is on playing a set of actions known as basic strategy along with a technique called card counting that allows the player to know when the deck is filled with cards that make the game advantageous to play. The idea that drives winning real money at blackjack for the advantage player is to make small bets when the house has an edge and to make large bets when the player has the advantage. Over time, if a player is skilled at basic strategy and card counting, it's possible to make a lot of money at blackjack.

Playing the Slots for Real Money

There are two types of slots, the video kind and the actual physical slot machines. Both games have the same basics. The idea is that on your turn, three or more reels will turn, and you win prizes based on what patterns are showing when the reels stop. For the recreational player, slots are a great way to get a lot of excitement and enjoyment out of playing real money games since they bombard the senses with lights, sound, and motion.

For the advantage player, on the other hand, there isn't much of a chance to get an edge over the house in most cases. The exception to this rule is in the case of progressive slots with a large jackpot. It's possible for the jackpot to get so large that the player will make money on average from playing the slots. Teams of players have been known to play together on progressive slot machines with a large jackpot, splitting their winnings evenly among the members of the group.

How to Play Real Money Video Poker

Video poker and its variations are a cross between slot machines and the standard poker hand rankings. The player makes a fixed wager and is then dealt five virtual cards on a video screen. The player gets to discard some of his cards and draw once like in traditional draw poker if he or she wants to. The hand the player has after drawing is then compared to a payout table that's usually posted above the video screen. From this payout structure, the player then receives prizes based on the poker hand he or she finished with in the game.

This is an excellent game for recreational players since it simulates some of the action from poker without making the players worry about having to outplay other human players. For advantage players, it falls in the same category as slots since it's hard to make money from in most cases unless there is a progressive jackpot that is very large.
