The biggest difference between video poker and live poker is that video poker is not played against other players. There is no need to have the "best" hand in video poker since there are no other hands to beat. All you need to do is put together a hand strong enough to get you paid. An on-screen pay table will tell you how much each winning hand is worth. If you are playing on a "Jacks or Better" machine, the lowest possible winning hand is a pair of jacks. This will earn you even money. Your winnings gradually increase with hand strength, with the ever-elusive royal flush garnering the biggest payout.
To play video poker, simply insert the number of coins you wish to bet and press deal/draw. You will be dealt five cards, just like in draw poker. From there, you can decide which cards (if any) you wish to exchange for other cards. Once you have decided what cards you wish to exchange, press the deal/draw button again to receive replacement cards. If you have a winning hand of any kind (a winning hand is usually anything higher than a pair of tens), you will receive a payout. The goal should naturally be to make the highest possible hand out of the cards you are dealt.
There are several variations of video poker to be found in casinos all over the world. The most common variant is the aforementioned "Jacks or Better," in which the lowest possible winning hand is a pair of jacks. Other popular variants include "Deuces Wild" and "Joker Poker." In "Deuces Wild," the "2" cards can be used to make any card in the deck. "Joker Poker" has a similar concept, only with the two joker cards acting as wild cards. Having wild cards does make it easier to create stronger hands, but the pay scale is adjusted accordingly in both of these variations. The lowest possible winning hand in these variants is usually a three of a kind; a pair of jacks is no longer a winning hand.
